There have been reviews here about weak coffee, but having been a coffee drinker for such a long time, it's obvious to me that it's about how much coffee vs how much water you use to get that perfect cup. Some complained it makes too weak a cup of coffee. To test that theory, we used the Extra Bold K-Cups that came with the machine and brewed up a cup using the SMALLEST setting available. WHOA...I don't know what people would EVER think it brewed it weak, because I like a strong cup, and this was STRONG. Actually, was a little too strong. My wife did the same with the MEDIUM setting, and that seemed to do the trick. It was in fact Bold, but not over the top. Using the LARGE cup setting, I found the extra bold coffee to be still very good, and for most people who do not like BOLD, it might be almost perfect, and maybe, still too strong.
The machine, as you might have guessed, offers 3 settings, for small cup, medium, and large. I have found myself using the Medium setting most of the time, for a good regular cup of coffee.
Now, I've also read that it leaks and is messy...HUH? Where and how that happens is beyond me. Now, yeah, I've only had it a few days, so maybe that might be the case in a little while. But right out of the box, this machine does what it's supposed to, fast, no mess, and makes a GREAT cup of coffee. I mean, WOW, why we waited so long to jump on this was beyond me.
Remember people, EVERYONE has different taste buds. Strong to some might be TOO strong to others. If you like BURNED coffee, you can still get that taste with the small setting. You might be upset at the small cup you get, but Espresso drinkers would be pleased. Taste buds need to be taken into account here.
As with a regular coffee pot, the less water, the strong the cup. With this machine, use the smaller setting if you need to. Personally, I found the 9 ounce setting using Extra Bold coffee to still provide a very good and strong cup of coffee.
We also have used the filtered water from the fridge as it recommends.
One thing that I also picked up with the reusable filter that you can buy separately. I read reviews and keep seeing "messy" but I can 100% guarantee that those folks are NOT following the directions properly. If you add ground coffee to it, and it's too fine, yes, it will probably clog up the filter and cause the water to back up.
I use my own grinder, and don't grind the beans too finely. Doing this, using the reusable filter, produced another great cup of coffee. I can see how it could be an issue of durability because the filter does feel a little "weak" or fragile from materials standpoint, but I would guess to either get 2 of them, or don't scrub the damn thing. I just flicked each side of the filter and it all came up, with the rest a quick rinse in the sink.
OVERALL:
Pros -
1. Easy to use
2. Coffee comes out HOT, unlike some of the reviews I read. (actually, hot enough it burned my hand grabbing side of cup).
3. Looks very nice
4. Easy to clean
5. Easy to remove the filter and replace with removable filter
6. 3 different settings
7. Can adjust water temperature settings
8. Self cleaning if needed.
9. Large variety of coffees available for the machine
10. QUIET (not sure what people were experiencing with noise, but I thought it was less noisy than my pot brewer)
Cons -
1. Little pricey, but might be a steal if you find yourself dumping too much coffee from the pot
2. Constant refilling of water holder can be a pain, especially if you have this under cabinets.
Remember, when people talk about making "weak coffee", I think it depends on the person, and it's adjustable, so you can make it stronger or not as strong depending on your preference.
We are VERY PICKY coffee drinkers, so trust me when I tell you, you'll love this machine and the convenience if you are big time coffee drinkers like we are.
OH, and one more thing. The stainless steel tray where you place the mug during brewing can be removed so you could put a travel mug under it and it fits perfectly.
I'm the only coffee drinker in my household. For me, the single serve system makes great sense as it's usually overkill for me to brew a whole pot just for myself. The nice thing with the Keurig system though, is that there are a wide varieties of other k-cups available too. My girlfriend is a casual tea drinker (and by that I mean she enjoys a cup of tea...but is by no means a snob about it), and there are plenty of teas for her to choose from. And now that Winter has started to set in, hot chocolate is fast becoming a staple evening ritual over here. And in regards to hot chocolate, neither of us cared much for the hot chocolate k-cups that we've tried so far, but it's quite simple (and inexpensive) to use regular powder mix from the supermarket and just use the Keurig to provide us with instant hot water for it.
As far as the pros and cons of the machine go:
Pros:
- Wide variety of coffee to choose from
- Wide variety of tea to choose from
- Instant hot water for hot chocolate, cooking, soups, etc.
- Very aesthetically pleasing. Easily the best looking small appliance in our kitchen
- Pretty good sized water reservoir. It's not as large as the B70s, but it's still not that bad.
- Extremely simple to use. The hardest parts for us are still deciding which variety K-cup to try next and restraining ourselves from drinking more coffee or tea than is good for us.
- Availability of k-cups not only online, but at retail stores as well. At first I was afraid that I would be limited to buying all my k-cups from Amazon. And while I do love Amazon and their prices are pretty much always the best, sometimes when you need a quick fix, you really don't want to wait for shipping (even if you're a Prime member). So far, I've found good stockpiles and good varieties at Kohl, Wegman's Supermarkets, and Bed, Bath,& Beyond. Not only is this convenient, but it sometimes leads to that impulse buy that you can immediately reap the benefits from (as soon as you get home). So far one of my favorite varieties was an impulse buy that I just happened to come across while grocery shopping.
Cons
- The "Travel mug-size" isn't exactly enough for our travel mugs. This is one benefit that the B70 model has over this model by having the "Extra-large travel mug-size" as well. While it's true that the coffee may be "watered-down" a bit and not as strong if using the larger brew size option, frankly, if I'm on the go and won't be able to immediately make another cup, I'd rather have weaker coffee than less coffee.
- It does make a bit of noise in between brews. It's not a problem for us, but it might be if there's a light sleeper in the house, and they happen to be sleeping in relatively close proximity to the kitchen.
Overall, we couldn't be happier. Our B60 is used multiple times, all throughout the day and was definitely worth every penny to us. And remember, not all coffee is created equal. I'm still going through the variety packs to settle on which I like best, and there are some that I really did not care for (I won't name which ones because we all have our own tastes). If you don't like the first k-cup you try, chances are it's not because of the machine. You just need to try a different one. With the variety available, I do believe there really is something for everyone with the Keurig system.
