Use whole bean espresso roast and have it ground at a coffee shop (espresso grind). Do not buy pre-ground. Buy whole bean and have the shop grind it. That saves time and you get the perfect grind without sacrificing flavor. Then store in a quality sealed container (preferably glass). I use to be the person who wanted the coffee ground right before I drink it. I have found that coffee tastes just as good ground at the shop - if stored properly. No need to refrigerate. Do not freeze. Keep away from heat. Use within a few weeks.
Use shot glasses or espresso cups. I think the Mini Measure ® Mini Measuring Shot Glass Measures 1oz, 6 Tsp, 2 Tbs, 30ml work the best. This machine does not have the clearance to fit regular coffee cups under the extractor. About 2 3/8". There are two issues you have to overcome when using shot glasses. One, espresso usually comes out of the extraction ports unevenly. You have to split the volume difference when determining 2 oz's of espresso. Two, the vibration of the machine will cause the shot glass to skid across the drip tray. Solution, trim and apply Shepherd 3603 1.5" Round Anti Skid Pads to the bottom of the shot glasses. You know, the ones you put under your couch. The little flat vinyl/rubber ones work the best. I even put them on my frothing picture. No skidding anymore. None. Whatsoever. period.
Run two 2 oz blanks of water through the machine before extracting (water only, no coffee). Like the directions state, just two and the machine should be hot enough. You don't need to wait 15 min or 1/2 an hour. After you run the two blanks, wait for the green light to come back on and you are good to go.
Its optimum extraction is 2 oz's. The issue, I usually make 3 oz's per drink with 6 oz's of milk or water or whatever. However, that is not a huge issue because that is actually perfect for making two espresso drinks, which takes three extractions. Don't worry, the process is easy to get down and becomes quicker with time.
A good drink I like to make consists of 3 oz's espresso, 2 oz's Coffee-mate French Vanilla creamer, and 4 oz's water. I call it a French Vanilla Café Americano. Do not buy any of the syrups - Yuck! Use flavored creamers instead - Much Much better. At least 10 times better. Seriously. Follow that recipe and you will not be switching back to drip coffee any time soon. Plus, you probably already have an addiction (like I have) to a particular creamer. You can keep using it :)
The tamp - I only tamp the coffee with about 5 lbs of pressure. No need to kill it, just flatten it out.
If you are making more than one drink, make all your espresso at one time. That will save time when switching back and forth from the steam and extraction mode. The steam wand will fill with water during extraction (not a design flaw). You need to clear it before steaming or you will add lots of hot water to you milk or whatever you are steaming. That may bother some, but it actually works out perfectly. I use that stored water to preheat my coffee cups. As stated in the directions, setting the machine to the extraction mode and opening the steam valve shoots hot water out of the steam wand which can be used for hot tea among other things.
If you are a rapid fire espresso maker, be patient and allow the pressure to subside in the extractor (a minute or two) before removing. Nothing serious, but you will hear a hissing sound and spent coffee grounds will shoot upwards onto the water port. If that happens wipe the water port down with a paper towel. That should be regular maintenance anyway.
This machine DOES produce a dry puck of coffee, but that is not necessarily a good thing. A dry puck of coffee is hard to remove from the extractor. To avoid this, remove the extractor and empty the spent grounds within 5 minutes (there abouts) after extraction. Careful not to remove to quickly as noted above. If done right, you will have wet grounds in your extractor. I just dump them in the sink. I don't even have to run the disposal because the grounds are fine and wash out easily. I realize some may cringe at this, but I'd rather do that than beat the side of my trash can with the extractor. You start to look like a crazy person, banging and banging and banging.
Use the Update International EP-12 Stainless Steel Frothing Pitcher, 12-Ounce and only fill it half way. This picture fits perfectly on the drip tray with the steam wand swiveled into the picture, which makes for a nearly hands free operation when used with the anti-skid pad. The steam wand is only submerged a 1/2 in or so. Works perfectly. I used to think I had to stick the steam wand at the bottom of the frothing picture. I have found that I get decent foam if the wand is submerged only partially. This technique will produce about 1/8 to 1/4 of foam with skim milk. If you want more foam (not suggested), use an electric milk frother.
Use the Rattleware 5-Inch Easy Steam Thermometer and attach it to the frothing picture. It is a little long, but it works out very well when you position the clip so that it is angled inside the picture handle (I wish I had a diagram). It is very quick and is easy to read. I usually heat to about 170 deg F. Any hotter and you will burn your milk.
If you pour the frothed milk first (espresso second), you can make espresso art with the drips from the remaining espresso in the shot glasses.
Update 3/19/2014 : I found a little measuring glass that looks like it will fit and work perfectly for the espresso extraction. Eliminating the need for two shot glasses. I ordered it last night while writing this review. I will update with results. Accessories RWSHOT Rattleware 3oz. Shot Pitcher . It is only 2" tall.
I have never written so many updates for a product, but this espresso machine just plain works and deserves it. So, we're just a few weeks away from having owned this for three years. It gets constant use as we generally work from home these days, and we often make cappuccinos for clients/guests who come by. I don't want to repeat too much of what I've said below, but I thought it was worth noting that this product has really stood up to the test of time. Absolutely everything still works as good as the day we bought it, and it still looks great too. Again, at least 3-4 drinks a day are made, and I've only once had it stop functioning properly, but once I cleaned it we were back as good as new (vinegar and water work great). If you're looking for a espresso machine (not a fancy press a button do nothing else one) this is a great buy. It'll last years and make great drinks. Also pretty impressed that the frother works well with almond milk. Got hooked on it, and I heard many machines wont foam almond milk well, but I haven't had a problem with that. Perhaps a bit less creamy than milk, but it's not milk so not surprising. 100% best purchase I've ever made on amazon.
***Update 1/2015
I thought it was time for an update! I bought this back in November 2013, and it's now January 2015. Today it actually stopped working for some reason, and I immediately freaked out because it has never done that before. I put it through a thorough cleaning with some vinegar and water, and it started working good as new again! We use this for a minimum of 2 cappuccinos every day, sometime more, and it still runs great and makes great coffee. Some of the minor issues mentioned above are still there, but I've gotten so used to everything, and we bought some nice cups that fit perfectly, and it's great. So after over 2 years, it's running outstanding still. It's nice to drink my coffee in the morning and think about how much money I've saved not going to starbucks everyday lol. Not bad for an espresso machine I paid under $100 for.
*** Original Post 12/2014
This thing is amazing! This came in about a week ago, and I have used it at least twice a day everyday in the week. I bought a frothing pitcher and a tamper for it. I wish I had known that there was a tamper attached to the espresso machine, it may have prevented my purchase of the separate tamper. Still, I prefer using the tamper bought as apposed to the one attached to the machine as it's a little clumsy getting to the built in tamper in my opinion...
So let's do pros and cons:
Pros:
-Amazing price!
-Great espresso (We have a far more high end version at work, and I can't tell the difference in taste. This one is a bit more noisy than that one...)
-Looks great. (I love the black and silver look of this thing)
-Built in frother and tamper!
-Did I mention the price?
Cons:
-Can't quite fit a normal cup in this so you'll need espresso cup (I use either shot glasses and fill a bigger cup, or I use tea cups. Probably my only big issue with it...)
-Cups tend to vibrate around a bit when placed under the spout so you need to hold them in place (sorry, not sure the proper terminology...)
-A little loud, but really, it's an espresso machine, it's gonna be loud...
-Lastly is drips for a fairly long time compared to my other machine after you turn it off.
Ok so summary time... This thing is great, and I love it. It works just about as well as the higher end version I have at work. The price is also amazing! I mean 80 bucks for an espresso machine that actually works is great! If I were paying in the $300+ range, I think I'd like a few things fixed, but this thing just plain works, and it pays for itself if you're a Starbucks junky like me, and you can save 5 bucks a pop everyday on your latte fix!
Lastly, when I was researching the reviews prior to buying this, a few people mentioned the frother being oddly placed or hard to use. I really haven't seen any issue with that at all. I bought the recommended 12 ounce frother that was recommended, and it works for me without any problems.
Top reviews from other countries
So far, it is up to our expectations: the coffee is great, the machine makes very good froth and we all enjoy. Even I started quite regularly taking my morning cappuccino.
My first froth was bad, very bad, but my wife found some videos on Youtube how doing this, so just search by yourselves and you'll find the "secret" as I did. And, believe me, my froth is now excellent. Can turn the spoon upside down and it won't fall.
The quality of the drink depends on the coffee we use and we tried several kinds, but Lavazza Crema & Gusto gives us the best taste. No need for an additional tamper, the built-in one makes a good job.
We didn't buy a frothing pitcher so far because the one we have gives us the excellent froth. Push the steam wand to the left (90 degrees to the machine itself), put into the pitcher and GO!
Pros: great coffee, great froth, even the beginner like me can do super cappuccino
Cons (not really): plastic frothing wand look cheap and fragile (but still keeps fine).

Some facts:
- i only got this machine for 1 week so i can't attest to it's durability.
- i used the milk frother 8 times.
- i used the expresso part 5 times (3 with the double shot filter and 2 the single shot filter)
- i read about the plastic head's threads for forthing may wear out since the wand is metal and the head is plastic. I still decided to buy it because of the price.
- i have a tassimo tas65 at home i bought at walmart 1 year ago. it's still good but the t-disc are costing me too much. 8 Cappuccino disc cost me 9$. since we are 3 in the house and like to have a Cappuccino on the weekends, that makes 6 discs each week. so it's 24 discs a month. The maths comes to 27$ + tax /month for coffee. I don't know about anyone else, but i prefer to spend that on something else... Also, the milk in the t-disc is not fresh milk, which worries me for the long term.
- i clean my machine after each use really well (i run steam/water after i'm finished with the forther and clean the coffee filter even before i start enjoying my cup)
- i use pre-ground coffee marked espresso (camardo espresso crema, macinato moka). I'm not crazy about it, will try something else once i finish the pack.
Positive:
- Price: i got this at 90$ free shipping, since there's this promotion going on now until end of march. you can't beat the price!
- Really REALLY good reviews at amazon.com! it's because of those reviews that i bought this machine! and i mostly read 3 stars reviews to know what to expect.
- Comparing that to tassimo or keurig, this makes your coffee way cheaper! and in Tassimo's case, with this machine, you use fresh milk and your own coffee.
- Environment: you're not using those discs, so less plastics in the garbage. i know some people don't care, but just image the tons of garbage each household creates using Tassimo and Keurig disc/pods.
- I'm not a coffee expert, so i can't attest to how good my expresso is. the way i made it, i had a decent amount of crema and good frothing with my milk (1%) , I just today used the forther without the plastic head: the milk was frothed fine.
- small : doesn't take lots of counter space.
- build in tamper, which works fine (i don't understand why some reviewers were complaining about it...)
Negative:
- i don't know if it's the machine or my coffee, but it doesn't smell/taste as nice as a nespresso cup i tried at someone's home. i must say, the nespresso made the absolute best tasting coffee i've had to date (including coffee houses). I'm going to try another brand of coffee and see if it's gonna improve. I think it's comparable to the tassimo tdisc coffee i had (nabob cappuccino), maybe tassimo was a bit better.
- Cleaning: more work than the tassimo, but that is to be exprected. Also, the forther's head is annoying to clean and the thread will wear off eventually (from other reviewers experience) so i decided to take it off. I use pre-grounded coffee marked espresso, so my filter wasn't clogged as some reviewer said and i clean while the machine is still hot, so it may be dangerous (very hot), but it's much easier to clean.
- time to prepare: i don't think you can prepare that before work in the morning. i'm the type that prefer to sleep and wake up at the last minute, so it's only on the weekends (or after work) i'm gonna use that machine. I don't mind since i have free coffee at work lol
- height for the cup: this wasn't a problem for me since i had little tea glass that fit under the filter, but i do believe it's a negative since many people have complained about it.
- height for the milk forther: with the head on, it was a problem, but since i took it off, i have enough space for a regular mug in which i pour my milk into (only half cup).
- noise: forthing milk makes LOTS of noise. but personally, i don't mind.
- taking off the plastic head: aesthetics and the milk splashes more while forthing. i cover the cup a little bit with a small paper tissu while forthing to prevent the splashes.
So in summary, it really depends on if you consider the negative points i made will really affect you or not. I'm really tolerant on some of the negatives. if this machine lasts me for at least 2 years, i will consider myself happy. As I said, i'm not a coffee expert, but i do like the coffee and the frothed milk that comes out of this machine. But i will change the brand of coffee once i finish my current pack as i'm hoping this machine can make coffee as good as nespresso (fingers crossed). Cleaning is messier than the 1 button machines, but i'm not complaining because of the price. I think anyone who is putting price at the top of their priority and a decent (not expert) tasting cup should give this machine a go!
I hope this review helps you decide!
